Jet2 adds new ski route from Blackpool

Low-cost carrier Jet2 has announced its winter schedule for this year, with a new route to Geneva from Blackpool Airport.

Starting in December, the seasonal flights aimed at ski tourists will run until April 2009 and will complement existing Jet2 services from Leeds Bradford, Manchester, Newcastle and Belfast to ski destinations. A flight from Manchester to Geneva was also announced as were services to Chambery and Salzburg from UK aiports.

Susan Kendrick, communications manager at the airport, said that there is "overwhelming demand" in the region for winter flights to the Swiss or French Alps, suggesting that the new route "will prove popular from the word go".

Passengers seeking summer sun from Blackpool will be able to take advantage of Jet2's new flights to Ibiza which will start in July. They are also offering Belfast, Murcia, Alicante, Malaga, Palma and Faro from Blackpool this summer.

The news of these new routes follows the £14 million takeover of Blackpool Airport by engineering and investment firm Balfour Beatty.

Ian Tyler, chief executive of Balfour Beatty, said the company will work alongside airlines to make the terminal "the airport of choice for residents, businesses and visitors of Lancashire and Cumbria".
