Manchester Airport has been named the best airport in Europe.

The north-west terminal picked up the Best Airport Award 2008 at the recent Airports Council International (ACI) event in Paris.

Manchester was named the best airport in the 10-25 million passenger category at the 4th Annual ACI Europe Best Airport Awards.

Other winners included Madrid's Barajas Airport which took home the title in the over 25 million passenger category and Lyon-Saint Exupery Airport which won in the 5-10 million passenger group.

Andrew Cornish, managing director of Manchester Airport, said: "These are challenging times in the aviation industry and we know that there are some excellent airports in Europe, so to win this prestigious award is particularly great news.

"Manchester Airport puts customers first and that includes both airlines and our passengers. We are committed to making life as easy and hassle free as possible for people when they travel through Manchester Airport."

The airport is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year and has a series of events lined up to celebrate the milestone.

This year will also see the completion of a new Concorde hangar, as well as ongoing work to improve facilities at Terminal 1.
