Cheap flights carrier Air Berlin has been presented with the 'World's Leading Budget Airline' prize for the second year in succession at this year's World Travel Awards in Turks and Caicos.

The airline beat off stiff competition from UK rivals easyJet and JetBlue Airways in the US to clinch the award, which is considered one of the best accolades that the tourist industry can bestow.

Commenting on receiving the prize, Air Berlin chief executive officer Joachim Hunold said: "The fact that the World Travel Award's international panel of judges have once again chosen Air Berlin as best in category reflects our full-service offering, efficiency levels and comfort on-board."

Air Berlin won the award after ratings based on assessments by 167,000 industry experts from different parts of the world.

Qatar Airways scooped the World's Leading Business Class airline at the ceremony, while Lufthansa was named as the World's Leading Economy Class Airline.

Dubai scooped two awards after it was named the World's Leading Destination and the World's Leading Cruise Port.
